History

Staff Training Institute (Programme) was established in 1948 at Delhi as an attached office of DG, AIR, New Delhi. It was declared as a subordinate office with effect from 01.01.1990. STI(P) Delhi and Bhubaneshwar alongwith five other Regional Training Institutes (Programme) at Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram imparts training to Announcers, Transmission Executives, Librarians, Programme Executives, Junior & Senior levels Management and Programme cadres of Prasar Bharati. The institutes are designing training programmes keeping in mind the programme & administrative training needs of All India Radio and Doordarshan and the administrative training needs of Doordarshan.

Thrust areas for training are Managing the Change, Marketing Management, Sale of Air Time, Corporate Work Culture, Digital Broadcast, Technical quality in comparison with private FM and Radio Stations, Modern presentation techniques, Voice Culture, Broadcast Management, Right use of Right resource at Right place, Innovative Programmes, Presentation of Music Programmes in more attractive manner, Copyright Act, Programme promotion, Interactive and Participatory programmes, to develop a condition in which Radio Station will be more interactive with Local Administration, State Government, Corporate Office, Cultural Institutions and other NGOs including Educational Institutions and Central Ministries.Achievements

Inhouse Courses:

The number of courses and trainees has drastically fallen in comparision to last year i.e. 2003-04 due to budgetary constraints at AIR stations and in the current financial year from April 2004 to March, 2005 STI(P) Delhi and Bhubaneshwar along with five Regional Training Institutes at Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Shillong and Thiruvanthapuram conducted 17 Programme courses and 13 Administrative courses and have trained only 202 Programmers of AIR and 202 Administrative officials of AIR & Doordarshan. In addition to this, two International courses in collaboration with AIBD on Broadcast Management and Peace Journalism were conducted in September and October, 2004 at STI(P), Delhi in which 34 AIR and Doordarshan programme and news officials participated.

Coordinated Courses:

Programme officers of AIR are being trained on Hard Disc Based Recording System/ Digital Broadcasting. 17 Coordinated courses with Staff Training Institute (Technical), AIR & Doordarshan, Delhi have been conducted since January, 2000 and 104 programme officers have been trained.

During the year 2004-05, Staff Training Institute (Technical), AIR & Doordarshan, Delhi conducted 7 training programmes on Hard Disc Based Recording System for the programme officers of AIR and trained 43 programme officers of AIR.

Outside Courses:

Till now, we were imparting professional training to our broadcasters, from Senior Officers to Announcers. Since November 2002 STI(P) opened its windows to the outside agencies.

(a) From November 2002 till June 2005, 20 workshops have been organised for Indian Airlines to train its cabin crew in Voice Culture. 477 Air-hostesses and cabin crew have been trained so far at STI(P),Delhi, RTI(P),Hyderabad, AIR,Chennai and AIR,Kolkata and many more are in pipeline.

(b) We have also conducted a workshop on Voice Culture for the news anchors/presenters of Doordarshan. 12 such news anchors were trained in the workshop.

(c) This year in the months of June & July, 2004, three workshops have been organised for Airports Authority of India to train its 30 Airport-hostesses in Voice Culture

(d) Prasar Bharati has signed an MoU with IGNOU for giving practical training to the students of Post Graduate Diploma in Radio Prasaran (PGDRP) and Post Graduate Diploma in Audio Programme Production (PGDAPP). Prasar Bharati is sharing 50% of the course fee received by IGNOU. Practical trainings for these diplomas have been given since June 2004 at various AIR Stations. About 1000 students have been trained in 55 batches at 19 AIR Stations all over India.

(e) VANI (Voice Articulation and Nurturing Initiative) Certificate course has been launched from 1st October 2003 for newly selected comperes, announcers and presenters. These courses are being conducted on payment basis at various stations of AIR. Till March 2005 about 70 courses have been conducted at 46 AIR Stations and trained 1250 newly selected announcers, comperes and presenters.

A handbook 'VANI' has been published, which is proving to be helpful to the participants of Vani Certificate Course as a practical guide. Till March 2005, about 1500 copies of 'VANI' handbook have been sold earning revenue for Prasar Bharati.

A brochure highlighting the activities of STI(P) - Leading The Way has also been published and sent to various Government & Private organisations and agencies for the utilisation of our expertise in the area of voice culture and of course for generating more and more revenue .

Revenue earned:

STI(P) during the year 2004-05 made an income of Rs.76,62,328/- and so far since 2002 till June, 2005 it has generated a total revenue of .Rs.1,15,13,897/- from all sources.

Future Plans:

· As we have entered Digital phase, we are planning to train all of our staff in phased manner in digital broadcasting.

· Till now, we were catering to the professional training of our broadcasters, from Sr. Programme Officials to Announcers. Now we have opened our windows to other outside agencies too. We are eager to provide our expertise to Universities, Private Radio and TV Channels, National and International Call Centres, Railways, Private Airlines and other Academic and Cultural Institutions, who are interested in getting the professional training on Voice Culture and Broadcast Management.

· The Voice Culture workshops and VANI Certificate Course have created a demand for training in programme presentation -Talks, Interviews Discussions, etc. among the talkers/ Artists. A VANI Kaushal Certificate in Public Speaking is in pipeline.

· Training of Rural Journalists in collaboration with NIRD, Hyderabad is in pipeline.
